2009 Toyota Tundra Gets New TRD Rock Warrior and Sport Edition Packages

0 komentar

Hot on the heels of special-edition truck releases from Ford and Dodge, Toyota announced two new Toyota Racing Development packages for the 2009 Toyota Tundra. The TRD Rock Warrior and the TRD Sport Edition will give Tundra buyers fresh options tailored to more specific interests.

The TRD Rock Warrior will be geared toward off-roaders and gets some suspension modifications along with a wealth of special trim. The Rock Warrior package will only be available on V-8 Tundra 4x4s with either the Crew Cab or Double Cab and will feature a tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks and TRD forged alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires. On the outside, it features a body-color front bumper and grille surround, a matte-black rear bumper, fog lamps, TRD Rock Warrior graphics on the side and will only be available in Black or Super White. Inside, the interior has been redone in black cloth and features a custom shift knob and pedal covers.

The TRD Sport Edition, on the other hand, will be made for the on-roaders who prefer custom street trucks. The Sport Edition will only come on V-8 Tundra 4x2s and is strictly a cosmetic enhancement package. The Sport Edition features body-colored front and rear bumpers, grille surround, door handles, heated side mirrors, and fog lamps. The TRD Sport Edition also features special side graphics and 20-in. five-spoke alloy wheels and will only come in Black or Radiant Red. Inside, the Sport Edition will be the same as the Rock Warrior, with a black cloth interior, custom shift knob and pedals covers.

No pricing has been released yet for the new packages, but Toyota says that information will be released some time between now and the 2009 Tundra's official launch in November.

Toyota HiLux TRD: Powerful Beast

The standard HiLux has a lot of truck-like manners, especially with a manual gearbox but the TRD is as easy as driving a Camry.

It comes only as an automatic and loses nothing because of it.

It looks distinctive, yet not overblown.

It is tastefully executed and the five bold colours in the palette suit the nature of this vehicle.

Side-steps are standard and needed to make a graceful entry or exit.

Once inside, the seats are as comfortable as any Toyota, though the same can be said of the ambience.

It's a Toyota, and a TRD logo and some red stitching fails to reflect the $9500 premium on the SR5 model.

But then the right foot kicks it in.

The Eaton supercharger cranks in immediately, so from idle this thing starts whistling and whining and moving.

Acceleration feels more leisurely than the 7.2-second sprint time, mainly because the engine will run only past 5000 revs before telling the auto box to up-shift.

Despite the extra 50kg — it's now 1850kg plus occupants, fuel and anything in the tray — it tracks positively through the corners.

There is, however, some initial lag at turn-in.

Once you get used to that, the vehicle can be flung into bends with a flat stance that belies the Hilux's high centre of gravity.

Off the road, the TRD has all the four-wheel-drive competency of the regular HiLux.

The suppleness of the suspension hasn't been destroyed by TRD engineers, so it's as comfortable as a standard model over rocks. But, like the standard model with automatic transmission, there's precious little engine braking on downhill slopes.

Thankfully, the TRD has bigger discs and calipers up front, yet oddly retains drums at the rear.

Ground clearance is only a bit down on the standard model.

TRD lowered the body height but fitted bigger-diameter tyres, so this one's as good in the dirt as the SR5.

TRD has showcased its new vision for a tough truck at the Melbourne International Motor Show with the first showing of its TRD HiLux Concept double cab 4WD.

Styling cues for the TRD HiLux Concept's design were inspired by the TRD Aurion, which was also revealed at the Melbourne International Motor Show.

TRD's family resemblance is easily recognised in the evolution of the Aurion's surface language around the vehicle's cooling slots, as well as in the lower 'mouth' area that on the HiLux incorporates openings for a nudge bar.

The TRD HiLux has an added toughness that befits a multi-purpose utility vehicle. It also has 17-inch six-spoke wheels with machine-faced and organically sculpted painted centres. The wheel design was chosen to suggest motion even when the vehicle is stationary. TRD graphics feature prominently to clearly differentiate it from existing HiLux vehicles

The rear of the vehicle features a vertical graphic and colour-coded bumper, while the front has an embossed TRD logo on the grille upper frame and a signature graphic on the mesh.

Driving lights have been added and protected by a unique surround, while the B pillars have been blacked out to visually extend the glass side areas. A revised side step with the TRD logo also defines the vehicle's profile. To complete the tray area, a sports bar has been designed in black to pick up the colour cues evident on the sides and back of the vehicle. This sports bar also incorporates the TRD branding.

Production versions of the TRD HiLux will have a 4.0-litre V6 supercharged engine to boost performance, in line with TRD's mission to offer customers integrated performance vehicles. They will also have upgraded suspension, brakes and other performance enhancements.

2004 Toyota Celica TRD

Considered to be the perennial competitor to the Honda Prelude, the Toyota Celica is a I4-powered coupe introduced several years prior to the Prelude. Breaking down the word Celica, the spanish word means ‘heavenly' or ‘celestial' and seems to inspire light and airy composition. Considering that Celica's have been built around Toyota's high-performance inline-4 engine it's difficult to imagine this as a ‘light' or ‘airy' vehicle. Toyota Celica's have spanned the years as popular sports cars produced by the Japanese company Toyota in 1970. Introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, it was marketed in December of the same year. Built at the Tahara Plant in Tahara Japan, Celica convertibles receive final assembly in conversion in California. Through seven generations, the Celica has gone through numerous revisions and design advancements yet has continued to keep the original emphasize of styling and driving enjoyment. Introduced by the company known for its dependability, reliability, and basic transportation felt bold enough to introduce their first sporty model. Following the release of the 2000GT in 1967, the Yamaha inspired vehicle was receiving enough acclaim to ensure success, and the Celica was introduced. With the Japanese economy strengthening over the years, the desire to drive something thrilling and fun was enough of a push for the Japanese auto market. The Japanese market released the ET, LT, ST, GT and GTV as Japanese models, and designed three different versions, the LT, ST, and GT for the export market. The first Celica STs arrived in America in 1971 and available only as a two-dour sport-coupe. It was marked an immediate success with its 1.9 liter 8R-C SOHC carbureted four-cylinder. Only available in four-speed manual transmission, the following year a larger 18R-C engine replaced the original. The GT model was introduced in 1974, bringing a two-liter engine that would help power Celica's for the next 11 years. In April of 1973 the Liftback was introduced for the Japanese market. It wasn't until 1976 in North America that a liftback model was released and available only in GT trim. This new model came with a larger engine, and was marketed as a sport-touring type vehicle that offered more comfort and luggage capacity. Released in 1978, production for the second generation Celica was begun in 1977 and was available in both Liftback and Coupe forms as well as both ST and GT trim levels. This new model offered more safety, economy and power than the models before. The main differences between the first and second generation Celica's was its increased dependability, safety, fuel economy and power. In 1978, second generation Celica's were awarded Motor Trend's 'Import Car of the Year'. In Japan, nearly 70 various models of second generation Celica's were released and sold. The third generation was introduced in 1982 and showed a great change in styling. It also featured a 2.4-liter engine. The first turbo in the Celica line was launched in Japan during September of 1982. 200 units of the Celica GT-TS were built and came with a 1.8 liter 3T-TE engine. These vehicles were built and rallied by Toyota Team Europe (TTE) and formed the basic car for Group B Celica Twincam Turbo (TA64). The following year brought the addition of the GT-S model by Toyota in an attempt to recapture the sporty image that Celica had lost as the newer models grew larger and heavier with each production. Now available in GT, ST and GT-S trim, all new models were available as either coupe or liftback models. The GT-S was given a 135-horsepower version while ST-S and GT-S came with 116-horsepower and all models shared the same 2.0-liter engine. The GT-S included much larger wheels and tires, independent rear suspension, special seats inside the sports interior, fender flares, and much more. During the 1984 model year, the GT-R and GT-TR (turbo) were added to the Japanese line up. At the same time, North American Celica's now featured standard fuel injection updating the 22R engine to the 22R-E. Built by American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) in California, the GT-S Convertible was unveiled in 1984. The ‘Ultimate Celica' with All-Trac Turbo was introduced in 1988. The most advanced and powerful of all Celica's, the Ultimate came with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and full-time all-wheel-drive. The All-Trac model came with a ten-speaker sound system, power operated driver's seat and sunroof, and full leather interior. The Ultimate was also the most expensive Celica yet. The All-Trac model was dropped in 1994, and for that year there was no convertible. 1990 released the fifth generation of Celica's. These models came with revamped styling, advanced wheels, tires, and more importantly, increased power. The ST now came with a 1.6 liter, the GT and GT-S expanded to 2.2-liter engines, and all were DOHC 16-valve.Standard items in the Celica grew to include more luxury items including Anti-lock brakes.Sixth-generation Celica's were introduced in 1994 and transformed the image that had been portrayed for the past twenty years. Bearing very little resemblance, the styling of the new models was considered to be ‘Supra-esque' with four exposed headlights. New standard safety features were added in the form of driver and passenger side airbags. CFC-free air conditioning was also a new standard feature. Only available in ST and GT structure, the sixth-generation was available in either coupe or liftback form. The optional ‘sports package' was available for the GT, though only in liftback. The third generation convertible, inspired by the GT Coupe model, was launched in 1995. The Coupe model was discontinued in 1997. Optional side skirts that would improve its aerodynamic efficiency were added in 1996 along with a redesigned rear spoiler. Another optional feature was the driving lights in the grille area, now fully redesigned. (This feature was standard on GT models) The decision to simplify the Celica ordering process was brought about by discontinuing the ST model in 1998. GT models were the only available Celica's, and came in a choice of Coupe, Liftback or Convertible and all included additional standard equipment. The following year the Coupe grade was taken off the market, leaving the GT Liftback and GT Convertibles available in 1999. The seventh generation Celica was introduced in 2000 and was complete with all-new avant-garde styling, aggressive attitude and impressive performance. The newest model featured plunging curves, lowered front fascia, sharp-edged panels and a longer wheelbase. This newest model closely resembled the XYR concept in everything except the front bumper and rear spoiler. The GT-S model was powered by a new 1.8 liter, four-cylinder DOHC all-aluminum engine. This newest model generated 180 horsepower at 7,600 rpm. It was available in either a six-speed transmission or four-speed automatic with sport-shift. GT models came equipped with VVT-I. Its 1.8-liter engine produced 140 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and was available in five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. Toyota Project Genesis was an effort by Toyota to capture the younger U.S. market with their newest 2000 model. Due to lack of sales and increased competition, the Celica and MR2 were discontinued at the end of the 2005 model year. In 2003 Celica sales had decreased to 14,856 from 52,406 units sold in 2000. It was estimated in November of 2004 that for the 2004 model year, only 8,216 Celicas had been sold. July of 2005 was the end of the export of Celicas.

Toyota Aurion TRD

Toyota's TRD performance brand hopes muscle in on the traditional Australian muscle cars.

TRD - or Toyota Racing Development - is now part of the brand's Australian line-up, adding a new dimension to a brand that has traditionally excelled at attracting the massed.

The flagship of the Melbourne motor show unveilings was a modified Aurion TRD, which will go on sale by the end of the year as a rival to performance variants of the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore.

"This is a world-first for Toyota - and it is happening in Australia," says Toyota Australia senior executive director of sales and marketing. "It's the first time TRD has been established as a separate brand under Toyota. And it is the first time anywhere in the world Toyota will engineer and market a range of vehicles under the TRD banner.

"We are drawing on Toyota's motorsport heritage to add a new dimension to the Toyota brand in Australia to increase the desirability of the Toyota brand with performance-enhanced vehicles.

As well as big 19-inch alloy wheels, an aggressive body kit, firmer suspension, bigger brakes and other additions, the Aurion TRD gets a supercharged version of the already powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine.

While Toyota is yet to confirm the car's outright power, Buttner says something in the region of 235kW is the goal.

Still, that's short of the potential rivals including the 245kW Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo, the 260kW Ford Falcon XR8 and the 270kW Holden Commodore SS (the latter two having V8 engines).

Toyota is hinting that the Aurion TRD could be priced at around $50,000, which is as much as $10,000 more than its more established rivals.

With power sent to the front wheels rather than the rear - as it is in the Falcon and Commodore - enthusiasts are already debating the merits of the Aurion TRD.

Still, Toyota is confident the Aurion TRD will find a niche and - perhaps more importantly - help Toyota create a more desirable brand, particularly among younger buyers who are increasingly more important.

The company is planning on spreading the appeal of the TRD brand, even experimenting with a high-performance version of the Hilux ute..

"What you see here is just the beginning," says Buttner. "TRD is not about enhancing just one model. We are starting with two vehicles this year and then TRD will be progressively developed and expanded."
